Do you have foot pain during your daily routines? Do you have a deformity, such as a bunion or perhaps chronic heel pain? At Thurber & Thurber Podiatric Medicine & Foot Surgery in New York, our six podiatrists know all about orthotics, a simple and effective way to eliminate discomfort, improve gait and protect deformities and ulcers. Why not learn more?
What are orthotics?
We offer two types of orthotics, both of which will fit in most shoes:
Custom orthotics are made from digital scans of your feet and provide the highest level of functional control to manage your foot problem. The“shell” or body of this device is made of a plastic or composite material designed to flex under your body weight. The shell functions much as the frames on eyeglasses do, comfortably holding the device (lens) in place. The post of a custom orthotic functions as the“lens”, and in combination with the flexibly level of the shell, provides a customized correction device. These devices are made by a lab and generally take 3 weeks to be delivered.
Heat molded orthotics are pre-made devices that our office can heat and mold to your feet for a type of customization not found in a drug store or running store device. Additional correction is also possible to be added as needed. These are made on-site during your visit at all of our offices.
Orthotics benefit many patients at Thurber & Thurber Podiatric Medicine & Foot Surgery. They include people with:
Foot pain from plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the connective tissue on the arch of the foot
Achilles tendonitis, involving the large tendon between the calf and heel
Overuse injuries, such as shin splints and ankle instability (from repeated sprains or weight issues)
Arthritis of the foot and ankle
Diabetic sores
Thinning fat pads on the soles of the feet (related to aging)
Limited mobility due to age or handicapping condition
